TLC Timely Tips:
Update Your Syllabus and
Schedule Announcements

Hello SOLS Instructors!

The semester is nearly here, so now is a good time to double check your syllabus and schedule some announcements before students are added to the course.

Reviewing Your Syllabus

Your syllabus acts as a contract between you and your students. It describes the policies students will be expected to uphold in your course. To ensure that you have covered all necessary policies, TLC provides our instructional community with templates and tools to use for their online and immersion courses, as well as a syllabus content checklist.

  • The Syllabus Content Checklist will help you ensure all syllabus requirements are met.
  • The SOLS Syllabus Template (Google Doc and Canvas options) will give you the most current verbiage on policies and guidance on what to include in your syllabi.
  • For guidance on language regarding AI usage, try the Syllabus AI Policy Guide as well as optional Syllabus Statements For Generative AI Usage.
  • To create an optional companion syllabus overview graphic that can be used in addition to the required format, visit the Graphic Syllabus Template.

Once you’ve updated your syllabus, don’t forget to upload your syllabus to MyASU and add your syllabus to Canvas.

How to Make Scheduled Announcements

One way to build your instructor presence in a course is by addressing the class through announcements. Though it requires an up-front investment of your time, you can schedule weekly announcements to be posted for the entire session so that you don’t have to manage them as frequently.

  • What is Instructor Presence and why is it important?
  • To schedule an announcement to post at a later date, use the “Available from” feature when you are creating an announcement to set the date the announcement will appear on.
  • Note: If you copy a Canvas shell from a past semester, announcements will default to being posted by a “User” profile. If you want the announcements to appear to come from your profile, you will need to copy and paste the content into a new announcement.

Sincerely,
The Teaching and Learning Center team
